King Hunter… A Profile in Dedication!

He hunts kings, BIG kings, trophy kings, that's all he talks about.  That's all he thinks about! He has an unparalleled record for producing derby winning King salmon early in the season. He is persistent, dedicated and even at times stubborn in his addiction to King fishing. So persistent, in fact that he fishes through all kinds of weather, rough seas, thunder storms and often alone! Then does it again day after day!

Typically he arrives on Friday evenings, and departs at day break, returning at dusk! 12 , 14, 16 hours on the water That's dedication alright!!! And he travels! Hundreds and hundreds if not thousands of miles a year! You will see his boat in various ports around the Great Lakes. If the king fishing is hot he will be there!

Who is this mystery man?   You won't hear him on the radio, you won't hear him at the launch ramp, but you will see him at the winners circle!  Those that know him tease him endlessly about his success and derby winnings. He smiles says that he is still just learning, and that there are far more dedicated and better fishermen then him on the water. Envy?  Jealous? Sour Grapes? Of course! What would you expect from those anglers who don't fish the derbies for fun. But for PROFIT!

The king hunter supreme is Dr. Doug Denton from Woodstock Ontario.
Quiet, unassuming,  modest, and dedicated, real dedicated,  Dr. Doug has consistently out produced some of Ontario best salmon fishermen year after year. Not seeking either fame or fortune Dr Doug quietly racks up the numbers and the prizes. He says "Well if I'm out there already I might as well try to win a prize."

Secrets?  Yea he has them, lots of them, but he will pass them on if you ask the right questions. Dr Doug professes its all luck but I don't believe that one for a minute!. Detail, detail, detail you need to look after the small details to be consistent.

You won't see him miles offshore fishing deep deep water.
He fishes shallow water and concentrates on structure.  Drop-offs , depressions and the like are all entered into his GPS. He saves this information and year after year these coordinates produce results. He fishes deep, out of temperature, cold, cold water. In fact he swears by it!

Dr. Doug fishes Lymans, in a variety of colours, Silver Streak spoons, Damn Ugly Spoons silver with purple/blue tape and silver Blue/pink tape. He also fishes Black and silver Evil Eyes, Nk 28 silver with Chartreuse / silver tape.

Dr. Denton varies his approach, varies lead lengths and boat speed until he gets results. He will change his lures often, going through a lure size and colour set-up  program to quickly eliminate unproductive  lures and colours.

His trolling speed is 2.5 to 3.3mph He will vary the speed through-out the day to match conditions and information he picks up off the VHF. His lead lengths vary but in 99 his lead length was upwards of 60 to 75' to be productive. Dr Denton extols the virtues of  experimentation and observation as paramount to his continued success.
