Field Tester Report  - Evil Eye Spoons

Flutterspoons were the mainstay of the New York brown trout fishery during the early eighties. Miller and Evil Eye spoons dominated the tackle sales during this period.
Evil Eye rivaled the action of the Miller Flutterspoon and quickly became an angler favorite. Colour selection was very limited during this period but many tape designs and home paint jobs doctored these spoons into the classic they have now become.
Browns found the slow fluttering action at 2mph irresistible!

Later during the season the hammered gold Evil Eye became a steelhead favorite.  Huge creels of steelhead fell to this spoon during August and early September!
Day after day that one gold Evil Eye would out-produce all other spoon and plug combinations.

Last season we used a silver chartreuse and a black and silver Evil Eye for underwater camera testing and found that their action was superior at speeds up to 3.3 MPH. We shortened the lead to about 3' and the action was good. We had used short leads in the coho days but slowly over the years we lengthened our leads from 8 to 40'.

The fluttering action was quite impressive with an exaggerated fluttering movement of over several feet.
Steelhead had quite a time trying to catch the spoon taking several attempts to line up his prey missing every time! It seemed  like  he was getting more incensed each time he missed the spoon! And when they did hit the Evil Eye they hit it with authority!

The Chart below illustrates the species caught on Evil Eye spoons during our New York State Brown trout fishing expeditions during the month of July over  the years.

Presently the Evil Eye spoon comes in 4 sizes and 41 colour combinations. The hammered Black and Silver and hammered Black and Gold are traditional favorites with dozens of Lunker kings to their credit!
