Big Lure -  Big Fish - Tips from The Pro!

Long time Charter Captain Cliff Goodale has nailed down a technique that  consistently nails big king salmon.
Cliff's customers have consistently won prizes in the Great Salmon Hunt by utilizing this large lure - large fish theory. Primarily fishing the waters off Bronte, Cliff uses a 5" to 6" Fluorescent Red Glow in the Dark J Plug exclusively.
He states " The big kings just can't resist that lure. I've tried many combinations of lures, colour, and size and this one  (JPlug) is the most effective!"

He waits until the kings have hit the "MUD",  staging in the estuary, awaiting the next good rainfall to enter the river for spawning. He runs his lure 20' behind the ball as close to bottom as necessary.
Trolling speed generally is around 3.5 MPH and  he varies the speed in short bursts to add extra action to the lure.
A proven technique from a proven pro!

The Lure Doctor - unusual paint designs!

We all have walked through the tackle stores. Row after row of bright coloured lures ranging in colour from the ridiculous to the sublime. All that flash - for the fish?
Or to catch the eye of the fisherman? I wonder?

I have found simpler is better!

Keeping the lure to basic colour combinations will often be the key to success!

On a recent king fishing trip as a guest on a local charter boat I experienced a lesson I'll never forget. While the rods I were running were silent the Captains rods were piling up the kings and handfuls of my money! I was taking a beating!  So I paid attention!

The lure,  a hand painted NK Magnum. All silver but with a basic simple paint design. The underside was painted flat white. The silver slightly shone through as it wasn't a heavy painting. The top half was sprayed black but only half of it was painted and faded out towards the middle.
This was accomplished by holding the lure on an angle and the overspray formed that fuzzy transition from black to the silver plate.

Simple but very effective!

I painted some large Eppinger Spoons - Magnum Flutterchucks and large silver plated Cop-E-Cats and achieved the same results! The silver flash and the contrast between black and white is a sure fire winner!!
